Dear Romania Animal Rescue Friends,
It is with great pleasure that I send you this spring newsletter! So many new campaigns are in motion, including our Spayathons, education programs, and veterinary care programs. I hope you enjoy this newsletter as much as I do!
Love to you all good people, Nancy Janes

Dear friends and supporters, The RAR team visited Tecuci after a long time (we could not do surgeries for stray animals due to the cold weather). We were greeted by people who wanted to have their pet spayed or neutered and at the end, 117 animals were sterilized. They safely went home or in a short foster time with the caretakers who brought them in, in the case of the homeless animals.
In Craiova, the appointments are going very well for RAR's spayathon in May. More than 100 animals are already booked, which proves the trust that people show for our work and that they entrust us with their animals.
March was also a month of the high tech surgeries at the clinic. Our staff performs complicated surgeries on a daily basis with quite limited logistics and the results bring a big smile on people's faces. Working with and for the animals in desperate need of help is not an easy job but with your help and support we change the fate of countless animals through spay and neuter, and through treatments and care we change the life of the animals in need regardless of if they have fractured bones, tumors, or suffer from diseases that untreated can endanger their lives.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your wonderful help and generous support,
Dr. Aurelian Stefan, DVM Veterinary Director, Romania Animal Rescue/ Animal Spay Neuter Int'l
The RAR Map of Romania

Tecuci
I would like to start by sharing a wonderful testimonial I received from our partner Mihaela Mocanu who works in Tecuci. We first met Mihaela in early 2010 and did one of our first Spayathons for her city of Tecuci that same year. Special thanks goes to our friends at Sterilize Dogs in Holland who help to sponsor this wonderful and successful program in Tecuci!
"I am Mihaela Raducanu from The Association for Animal Protection "Tomita" from Tecuci. I'm happy to announce that we are making considerable progress regarding the stray dogs in our town since the Mayor decided to help us solve this problem humanely. He renovated for the RAR (Romania Animal Rescue) team a nice place where our vets are going to spay/neuter every month from now on. Yay!!
In addition the Council is going to decide that everyone will have to spay/neuter their dogs, otherwise they will have to pay a tax. Then the Public service management for stray dogs is going to microchip all the owned dogs to prevent them from being abandoned.
The Association "Tomita" also suggested to the Mayor that we should provide a way for people to adopt dogs by building an adoption center. And now this project has begun, too.
More good news is that we started an educational program for schools. We already gave to children 1,000 booklets that were generously donated by RAR, which is planning to donate 600 more booklets. I was very happy to see how open the teacher and children were to this educational program.
We are very grateful for all this support from RAR`s donors. Thanks to them in Tecuci we spayed/neutered about 2300 dogs till now and we need to continue this free castration program because there are a lot of people who really care about their animals and want to castrate them but they can't afford to. The City Hall is also going to collaborate with a local vet who is going to be trained by RAR vets, so he can use the best skills and techniques to spay/neuter. This way the animals will be able to recover faster and easier.
We are on the right path here in our small town helping the dogs and I want to tell you that the people from Tecuci are very grateful for your support.
So, dear friends we need you to go on donating to RAR so this wonderful team can provide more free sterilizations and more booklets for the children in schools. Thank you again for helping to make this possible."
Thank you lovely donors who made this all possible.
Mihaela Mocanu

The Romania Animal Rescue Spayathon for Bistrita will be May 27–31. The city is donating for 100 free spays at the event. Our goal is to get funds for an additional 150 spays/neuters. Please help us to reach this very essential goal to help the animals in Bistrita!
Help for the Small Town of Vatra Dornei
RAR received a request for help from Roxanna in Vatra Dornei. She and some other ladies run a small shelter for 50 dogs. They are in desperate need of spay/neuter. Vatra Dornei is located far up north in Romania, but our wonderful friend Dr. Livioara from Iasi agreed that she would travel there to help these wonderful ladies with their spay/neuter needs! Lelia will go and assist Dr. Livioara. We have just ordered 2 new spay packs (sets of instruments to be used for spay/neuter) to give to Dr. Livioara so that she will now have 4 packs to sterilize for surgery. Once these new spay packs arrive, the ladies from Vatra Dornei will receive our help, thanks to your support! From Roxana Pasat in Vatra Dornei:
Hello! I am glad you gave me the opportunity to be present in this group.
This way we wish to make known our work in public shelter in Vatra Dornei, Suceava County, Romania. I did not know until a few days ago of the existence of this organization Romania Animal Rescue, nor has the big heart has Nancy Janes. She had the patience to talk a little with me on the issue that bothers us.
We faced the same problem all over Romania about stray dogs and I like that together and invaluable support of all donors to be able to sterilize stray dogs and neuter.
I sincerely hope to be able to convince the Mayor and local authorities imperative need to start sterilizations/neutering in Vatra Dornei too and also to obtain his agree in for starting and sustaining this campaign that can only donors for RAR we will be overwhelmed.
At first we desperately need to sterilize, castrated dogs from the shelter because they always brings dogs, but nobody sterilize and multiply in shelter. We are volunteers, great animal lovers and we take care of community dogs in Vatra Dornei City Hall shelter and support specific activities in various Animal Protection Association Pro ALMA in Vatra Dornei. We take care of the public shelter dogs, we provide daily food even if it is very little, do clean, make them different medical treatments, this year we managed very hard and we dewormers, we vaccinated, we did even sterilization. From our money we paid vets that have occurred in desperate cases, just do not see dogs suffering, deseases. Notwithstanding any benefit from the funds, sponsors, no vet for shelter. I want to do more than that, but we have no power, and power is money for these actions, unfortunately. We are grateful and we would like to thank all RAR donors for their support.
Fundraiser for the Spay/Neuter of Cats for the City of Iasi
New fundraiser for cat spayathon in Iasi, Romania's second largest city. This just in: We have the offer of a matching donation for the spaying of 15 cats if we can get donations adding up to help 15 cats! Please help if you can!

Thanks to the generous RAR support, we were able to start the cats spay project in Iasi today. In the past I was overwhelmed by the number of appeals I received from different rescuers and careers due to the huge number of stray cats in this city. The situation is quite horrible especially during the winter months when they have no place to hide and warm up, no food, at the mercy of harsh weather conditions. There is no cat shelter in Iasi, this is why people are constantly facing difficulties when trying to rescue as many as possible. Every year thousands of kittens are born and die on the streets due to horrid painful diseases, starvation or poisoning. In Iasi, there isn't any low cost cats spay/neuter program. Therefore, people here do not always do the right thing because they have no money. The number of stray cats increases rapidly, and we are confronted daily with more and more cases of neglect, abandonment, severely injured cats. Personally I have witnessed during the past month many cases of cats with mammary tumors, some very serious cases, only because the cats hadn't been spayed while still young. I am very grateful for the support of Romania Animal Rescue, but I understand their support is dependent upon donations from the public. I hope you can help the cats of my city, Iasi, Romania by donating to Romania Animal Rescue and stating "For Iasi Cats". All my love to you, guys, wherever you are! Spay/neuter--no more suffering!"
Lelia, Iasi, Romania
These photos are of two of the newest patients who were spayed free of charge. The cat with the hurt eye had her injury treated and sutured.
Beginning with 20 free spays/neuters thanks to generous donations, we hope to expand this program year-round for the cats of Iasi. The city of Iasi already provides free spay/neuter for the dogs, but nothing for the cats. Dr. Livioara from Iasi will do this campaign along with Lelia. Ongoing free spay/neuter will be done as long as funds are available.

Rescue of the Month
(Okay, we have two this month.)
Allea
Allea, treated by the great RAR team. Her fragile bones were fractured due to a car accident.
Elly
Meet Elly, rescued from the streets of Tecuci by Mihaela. Elly was brought to the clinic in Bucharest for treatment, and tested positive for distemper. To date, we do not know if Elly will pull through or not from this dreaded disease. She has been eating and wagging her tail, but we just cannot predict the outcome. We have secured some donations for her treatment and we are hoping and praying for the best. She already has three offers of great homes. We just hope she survives to live happily forever after. Your support for Romania Animal Rescue allows us to treat animals for injuries and diseases. Should Elly make it, she will be needing foster care until she is strong enough for adoption. She will also need good nourishment. Her leg is healed up now (it was injured) and she is able to walk.

Requests for our educational books have been coming in from around the country. Daciana from Bistrita has asked us for more books for her in-school educational campaign, as well as Mihaela from Tecuci for their in-school campaign.
We were able to secure 600 books for Tecuci, and hope to get more for Bistrita and other communities that will be requesting them. The cost per book is $1.83. These books are 20 page full-color and full of fun and interactive activities. Children and adults of all ages love them! Donations for our educational campaign help us to print more of these great animal welfare educational books.

Thank you, Ruth Osborne, for putting this ad together. Toby had a broken front leg at about 14 weeks old. Although the bone healed, the ligaments in the other front leg are stretched and not as tight as they should be. He is now under the care of Speranta Pentru Animale Craiova.
Hi, I'm Toby from Romania
To get me into a nice new home and off the street can cost around US$800 (€500, £500), which doesn't even include the vet fees for repairing my broken leg!
For this amount, Romania Animal Rescue can spay 37 females, which means after 1 year, 576 puppies can be saved from suffering like I have.
