Dear Romania Animal Supporters »

The Spayathon was outstanding: 1400 spay/neuter procedures! We just could not turn them away! Dr. Aurelian and I traveled to Giurgiu, Botosani, Iasi and Tecuci. We are going to perform 200 spay/neuter procedures in Giurgiu this month, and still have the ongoing spay/neuter in Iasi and Tecuci each month. Dr. Lidia from Botosani will be going to Bucharest to train under Dr. A to learn how to spay/neuter and then will head up a program in that region of Moldavia in Romania.

So, we have our work cut out for us! Thank you again for your support! It means the world to the animals and me!

Thank you,
Nancy Janes,
President, CEO and Founder
Romania Animal Rescue, Inc.

Dear Romania Animal Rescue friends and supporters,

May has been a month when we passed the 10,000 surgeries mark and we now look for 15,000 surgeries. With your help we hope to achieve this number by next year. Our work has been non-stop as we still see desperate pups on the streets. Please keep supporting us to prevent innocent souls from being born to suffer and have a miserable life.

Thank you and god bless you,
Dr. Aurelian Stefan, D.V.M

Craiova Spayathon »

(View more photos of this Spayathon.)

In total the Craiova Spayathon spayed/neutered 1400 animals: 150 cats and the rest were dogs, 98% of whom were females! Romania Animal Rescue has now spayed/neutered over 11,500 animals in Romania free of charge, thanks to the generosity of our donors!

Education BookletRory and Nancy met with the Vice Mayor of Craiova, Dinca Marinica. He has asked RAR to start an in-school educational program there!

This is great news for Craiova. To have an agreement with the Vice Mayor is icing on the cake! We are seeking sponsorships for starting an educational program next September in both Craiova and Tecuci. The program in Craiova will teach school children about animal welfare, the benefits of spay/neuter, and how to take care of their pets.

Bubu and RoryAltogether, 12 dogs and puppies have been taken to new homes in Austria and America by Carol, Bonnie, Mary, Rory, and Nancy! Thanks to funding from Romania Animal Rescue, adopters, and Rory Janes, there are homes for Romanian dogs and puppies in British Columbia, Canada and in the US states of Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin, as well as in The Hamptons. Bubu (pictured left) is one of the three dogs brought back for adoption in the USA. She will be adopted to a family in Oregon.

Romania Animal Rescue has spayed/neutered over 1000 animals in Tecuci, Romania. With the help of our friends from Holland, all procedures were free of charge to the people of Tecuci!

In addition to the Spayathon in May, RAR sponsored spay/neuter in Moreni (two days), Braila, and Tecuci.

After the Spayathon »

Dr. A and Nancy visited Botosani and met with Lidia, Dana and Stefan from Association ADOR. Lidia is a vet in Botosani, but would like more training on her spay/neuter skills. She will be traveling to Bucharest to train under Dr. Aurelian Stefan so she can spay/neuter in Botosani, thus humanely decreasing the birth of the unwanted puppies.

Dr. A and Nancy traveled to Iasi, where we met with Lelia again. We also visited Braila to meet the horses rescued from the Danube Delta that were on their way for slaughter in Italy.

More News from Romania »

We will be setting up an elementary school educational program in Tecuci in September. The program in Tecuci will teach school children about animal welfare, the benefits of spay/neuter, and how to take care of their pets.

Association Tomita is looking to purchase a used car so they can transport dogs from the villages surrounding Tecuci to the monthly spayathons. The people in the area are very happy to have our program, but many of them cannot transport their animals to the clinic where the spay/neuter events are held.

RAR is going to Giurgiu to do an additional 100 spay/neuter for the group Phoenix now in June. Nancy visited Giurgiu while in Romania, and found a devastating situation for the dogs there. There are many, many dogs on the streets in Giurgiu. Dr. Aurelian and Nancy saw two dead dogs on the highway being eaten by two other dogs. RAR is looking to combine forces with another group in late June to perform 100 more spay/neuter procedures in Giurgiu. We need donations from you to be able to proceed with this help. Thank you for any help you can provide! $22 will spay/neuter a dog in Giurgiu for the Association Phoenix. Please donate for this spayathon in Giurgiu.

Romania Animal Rescue hopes to hold a Spay Event in Botosani in September! It will cost $2250 to spay/neuter 100 dogs in Botosani. With enough donations, we can make it happen. Please donate for this spayathon in Botosani.

A.F.R.A. Online Radio interviewed Nancy Janes on June 4. Kendra chats to her about the important work her organization does in Romania, her latest visit there, and why Catch/Neuter/Release programs are more effective than euthanasia. Listen to the interview.

Why Spay/Neuter Is Vital for the Animals »

This photo is of some puppies living in a hole near a trash dump in Bucharest. Olimpia Marina took Dr. Aurelian Stefan and Nancy Janes there. The whole area is going to be cleared out and a new development will go there. We are going to spay/neuter the dogs in the dump in early June. As for the puppies there is no place for them to go.

LiliLili
Lili, beloved dog of Camelia, recently passed away. This photo is a lighter moment from this past Easter. I will miss her dearly, not only because she is my furry best friend, but for the fact that she's done her best to take care of us and keep the whole family happy. Such a trooper, and such a decent little person! I wish I'd be half as good as she is. --Camelia

TeddyTeddyTeddy
Teddy: 12/02/1991-05/06/2011
Teddy was barely six weeks old as he lay with his siblings in a basket at the shelter. That was to be the day that our lives would change together forever. In his younger years, Teddy was alert, intelligent, serious, a wonderful loyal and loving companion. He was a good boy. He was always calm, gentle and serious. He had an even and good disposition. He was also a good judge of people and I trusted his instincts. He took care of his home and his humans and other animals who lived with him. He was a very lucky boy, he never knew hardship or suffering, only love. He was an equal member of our family. He took every day in stride, never fussed. Even as he aged and lost his sight then eventually his hearing, he never complained and never became fussy. He would just pace and pace like the little old man that he was. He lived a long and wonderful life of almost 19 1/2 years. I am sure that he lived so long because he loved his life and he loved me. I am so fortunate to have known him and to have had him in my life. He is my heart, he is my love. From that first day, it was love, a love that lasted almost two decades and will continue forever. I have heard it said, that all the love and the joy will be forever in his heart which he took it all with him when he left from my arms on his journey to the bridge where he waits for those he loves. Until we meet again, his love, his loyalty, his memory will forever stay in my heart. --Roxanne

Em Kitty liked to sit in the kitchen on her heating pad and also under the blanket covering the love seat (in her cave). Other favorite activities were sitting on people as soon as they sat or lay down, eating grass outside on her brief outside excursions, licking water off the bottom of the shower, sharing the bed while we watched TV, and scolding us with her best "old lady" meow.

Thank you to Drs. Stewart, Black, and Goessmann-Anderson for providing her vet med care throughout her golden years. We are so grateful for the extra time we were given to spend with her due to this thoughtful care. Thank you to Jim, our cat-sitter and friend, for the love and caring her showered on Em Kitty during all our trips. Thank you to Margy, Joe, and Emily for picking her out at the shelter in the first place.

We love you Em Kitty, always and forever. You are our beautiful angel. We will never forget you. --Mary

HuskyHusky, a homeless dog that was hit by a car in Romania. He was due to be fitted with a cart and transported to the United States. Three days prior to his transport, Husky died. This is very upsetting for all of us involved in his rescue. Many people donated towards the purchase of a cart for Husky. Our Thanks »

Special thanks to the volunteers at the Spayathon! Bonnie and Mary, who traveled all the way from the USA to pull ticks, clean instruments, deparasite dogs, and feed the cemetary and street dogs - not to mention starting the new RAR grooming center! Mary adopted Tony from the Spayathon, and Bonnie adopted Vulpe! Thank you Carol from Animal Care Austria for all your tick-pulling, ear cleaning and everything else, including the use of the Furminator, as well as for volunteering at the Spayathon! Carol adopted 6 puppies (5 abandoned as infants in the forest!) to take to Austria for adoption!

It's quite amazing to have such wonderful people in this world, who will do anything, and I mean ANYTHING, to help the dogs and cats.

Rory, thank you. My heart goes to you for this! You were marvelous!

Thank you, Lelia, for coming from Iasi to help us with all the immense amount of work we had to do as well as for your translations. You ROCK! I'm so glad you are in charge of the program in Iasi!

Mihaela, thank you for all your help, and for your translations and for being a tour guide when "Bossy" would let the volunteers off duty for a brief period! Thank you for running our spay/neuter program in Tecuci.

Dr. Bachman, thank you for traveling all the way to Craiova to help with the Spayathon. 1400 animals were spayed/neutered, with your help. You advice is very appreciated. Thank you for all your work!

Dave, thanks for coming to volunteer. You did a great job!

Thank you, Andreea and Otilia from Animal Life in Sibiu, for volunteering at the Spayathon!

HUGE THANKS to all our donors for helping RAR to achieve all our progress for animal welfare in Romania!

And last, but not least:
Thank you so much Hope 4 Animals in Craiova for organizing such a successful event!
