Special Announcement »

Romania Animal Rescue has a wishlist of medical supplies, which provides equipment to our resident vets in Romania. These items range in price from $1.75 for a bottle of dextrose for maintaining water balance to a $3570 autoclave that sterilizes spay/neuter tools. Donors choose what they want their donation to pay for, and RAR orders and ships the items to Romania. We have just received a wonderful donation from Cold Noses Foundation to purchase an autoclave and three packs of spay tools. We would like to thank Cold Noses Foundation for their very generous gift, and would like to let you know that we will be sending these items to Dr. Pepe Stefan in our next shipment to Romania. If you would like to make a donation for other items, please visit our Wishlist. You can also join the Cold Noses Foundation group on Facebook.

Dear Romania Animal Supporters »

Dear RAR Friends,

Well, we have a great newsletter for you to read--all good news! The dog, Ambi, found in the garbage bin in Braila with two broken legs has had three surgeries and will be adopted to the UK. The four orphaned puppies are at the shelter in Bucharest and will be sent to Holland in September for adoption. All of this thanks to YOU!

Maria from the Holland charity, Roemeense Hondenforum, was in Tecuci for the monthly spay/neuter event. Dr. Pepe performed 100 spay/neuter procedures! The work in Giurgiu of free spay/neuters has continued this month.

Thank you everyone for helping the animals as you have. They are very honored to have your help, and so are the vets and myself!

Nancy Janes,
President, CEO and Founder
Romania Animal Rescue, Inc.

Summer has set in Romania and temperatures of 100° F are registered daily, which makes the life of stray animals more difficult and dangerous as they roam for long distances in search of water and food. We the medical team continue to provide free sterilization throughout the hot season, thus preventing the birth of thousands of new helpless pups in the coming months.

Starting in September, we are beginning our new project: The Veterinary Training Camp, which is dedicated to final year students and young inexperienced vets who want to learn about our state-of-the-art techniques and how to set up field clinics. This training camp will make a great difference by improving the medical standards in Romania and allowing us to train more vets in a shorter period of time. Thanks to you, our dear friends, Romania Animal Rescue will offer grants to as many vets as possible that once trained will return to their hometowns and share the knowledge they received from us. Please continue to support our projects as they are the best animal welfare projects in Romania that make the most impact with little resources.

God bless you all,
Dr. Aurelian Stefan, D.V.M

We would like to announce the launch of a new website, VeterinaryTrainingCamp.com. This camp gives veterinary surgeons and nurses an opportunity to improve their surgical and anesthesia skills.

Rescue Update »

Well, the good news is that Ambi, aka Holly, the dog from Braila with the broken hind legs who was thrown into a garbage bin, has had three surgeries on her legs and is recovering! To top that off, she is being adopted to the UK in January! Mr. Vasile will foster her until she can be taken to the UK for adoption by the great folks from Romania Animal Aid.

The four orphaned puppies (whose mama was hit by a car and killed) are now safely at a shelter in Bucharest until September when they will be escorted by our friend, Maria, to Holland for adoption! Thank you everyone who helped us so much with donations for these little ones. All the thanks goes to YOU!!!!

Vulpe was adopted by Bonnie at the Spayathon in Craiova in May. She had dozens of ticks in both of her ears and all over her body, and was extremely thin. Bonnie, a long time supporter and donor to RAR, adopted her. Vulpe was transported to the United States, and now lives with Bonnie's rescued Beagle, Caroline, in Virginia.

"Tony was just a skeleton of a puppy when he was brought to the Spayathon in Craiova. He was the one that broke me.

"I felt his little body that was almost unbearable to touch because it was just bones, and I started crying. Too much sadness in Romania. Mary, who was volunteering from Washington at the Craiova Spayathon, saw that I was in tears with this little one in my arms, and said, 'I'll adopt him, Nancy!' The sweetest words I have ever heard! Thank you, Mary and Bill, for adopting Tony and for putting 12 pounds on him!"--Nancy Janes

More good news! Marelena Ganea told Nancy that Alma is doing well and is almost ready to go up for adoption! (Alma is the dog we told you of last month that was hit by a car and found by a Good Samaritan.) Dr. Pepe performed surgery on her elbow and gave her good food. She responded quite well to all of this tender loving care! Her head trauma is much better too. Thank you to everyone who helped us to help Alma!

We are currently working on the rescue of nine dogs and puppies from a US military base near Constanta (the Black Sea area). These dogs and pups have been rescued by some US personnel based there, right as the dog catchers were coming to get them! Many of the dogs and pups were hidden from the dog catchers, but some were taken to the pound by the dog catchers and a large ransom was paid to retrieve these dogs. We are hoping to send three to Holland for adoption (a puppy and two dogs), and then the rest to the USA for adoption. The USA dogs will be flown to the families of the military people in the New York City area. Two of the puppies are currently at AlmaVet in Bucharest. One is undergoing treatment for a severely maimed leg that may have to be amputated. I will keep you abreast of this story as things unfold, and we will be seeking donations to give these poor animals veterinary care and to fly them to freedom.

Spay/Neuter News »

Fiducia Shelter dogs need spay/neuter

On July 27 and 28, 100 animals were spayed/neutered by Dr. Petrisor (Pepe) Stefan in Tecuci. Maria from Roemeense Hondenforum was there with a photographer volunteer from Holland to capture the events as they happened. Next month we will be returning to Tecuci for our monthly spay event. Sandie Tanner of Missions from the Lord has asked RAR to go to Nicolesti as well to do some much needed spay/neuter procedures in that town.

In Iasi, the 50 spay/neuter procedures per month continues, and the educational campaign in the schools will start up again in September (co-sponsored with Romania Animal Aid, UK). RAR has also been asked to return to Bacu to provide free spay/neuter for many dogs there. Your support for these programs is greatly appreciated.

RAR has been asked to help the dogs at the Fiducia shelter. They are in desperate need of help and spay/neuter for their animals. As luck would have it, we will be able to go to Fiducia shelter in August and spay/neuter up to 200 dogs for them. Dr. Aurelian and Dr. Pepe will go there. The folks at Fiducia are thrilled, and so are we! You can donate to the Fiducia Spayathon to ensure a successful spay/neuter campaign in Fiducia, Romania. Here is the plea:

Adapostul Fiducia
‎Nancy Janes, I finally can give you the number of dogs from the shelters. There are 305 adult dogs, of which 200 are females. We managed to neuter 46 males, some of the dogs were spayed/neutered before. But for sure there are at least 180 females to spay. My hope is now for you to come and help us with the females. The cruel truth is the town doesn't have a doctor able to spay females without killing them. And to take them to big towns like Cluj, it's impossible for me to do this for 200 dogs. So please, don't forget us! Thank you again for giving me hope!

Dr. Aurelian was in Moreni holding a simultaneous spay event for 25 dogs there for Anda Popescu, while his brother Dr. Pepe and the gang were doing a great spay/neuter in Tecuci! We will return to Braila (Ambi's hometown) to do as many spay/neuter procedures as possible in that city in August or September.

Crissanca created a video of the photos from our May Spayathon in Craiova and Tecuci. You can watch it on YouTube.

We are starting a new ad campaign. Please visit our Press Kit page to view and download our latest ads.

Educational Program Heads to Craiova »

Lelia Creanga from Iasi will be traveling to Craiova to teach personnel there on how to start an in-school education program, per the Mayor of Craiova's request! She will have 1000 of the educational booklets to give them to start the program in the Fall! So, this will mean that RAR has educational programs in two Romanian cities, Iasi and Craiova! Now we need to start one in Tecuci as well!

GlobalGiving Challenge »

We have been tasked with meeting two donation challenges from GlobalGiving. This fundraising company meets 20 standards for charitable accountability, according to the Better Business Bureau.

  1. The first challenge is to fund the spay/neuter of 1000 dogs in Romania.
  2. The second is to fund the expansion of our educational program in the Romanian school systems by printing 10,000 animal welfare booklets.
