"IZZY" (ISADORA)
This month's newsletter is dedicated to the memory, and the life of Izzy who passed over the Rainbow Bridge. Read more about beautiful Isadora in the Dedication section below.
Dear Friends and Supporters of Romania Animal Rescue,
Our newsletter author is not feeling well, and I have offered to do the newsletter ....... so here goes!
I returned from the very successful trip to Romania with 7 puppies! Marin Humane Society is adopting them out for us. One has a broken leg, or shoulder, and he will be treated by MHS! The puppies came from pure hell, as you can imagine. One was running in traffic, a skeleton, and when we caught her; we found her dead sibling nearby. Three are from a cemetery in Braila, where they were dumped when only infants. My friend,
Daniela Dragomir, was feeding them. Then there were 3 that were dumped at the University in Bucharest where
Dr. Bachman trained students one day. They were just too skinny to be puppies...I had to take them home, even if they had ringworm!
Cristina traveled with Dr. Bachman, our wonderful Vet Tech, Dave, and myself. Cristina was our translator as well as funding the travel in Romania for us! She met with
Mr. Cenac, and has now contracted with him to set up vet care and some staff to help him at his shelter! So now Mr. Cenac has a sponsor!
FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS, WE ARE NOW GOING TO CONCENTRATE OUR EFFORTS IN BRAILA, which is about
12 miles (20 km) from Galati. Dr. Ileana has registered RAR-Galati, and can now get support from local Romanian businesses for the spay/neuter program. Her clinic is great. Braila, on the other hand, is like going back to how Galati was in 2003.
DR. BACHMAN TRAINED 22 VETS AND STUDENTS in the cities of Bucharest, Braila, Buzau, and Sibiu. Dr. Bachman and the vets he trained were able to spay/neuter about 100 dogs, as well as doing treatments, and we left supplies for the spay/neuter of 200 more animals with our newly trained vets! Dr. Bachman left spay hooks for the vets he trained, as well as tattoo ink. We met a wonderful group in Sibiu,
Animal Life, and hope to be able to support them in the future with aid for their shelter and adoptions.
Dr. Bachman prepared a spay/neuter video from his trip, which can be viewed on Dr. Bachman's Photo Diary.
RAR IS GOING TO BEGIN WORKING WITH DR. STEFAN AURELIAN to set up spay/neuter campaigns in Romania. Dr. Stefan was trained in Colorado by Dr. Jeff Young and is a great vet. My hope is to get a van so that we can do mobile spay/neuter clinics in many places.
ROTARY INTERNATIONAL HAS OFFERED TO SEND SOME VETERINARY EQUIPMENT to Romania for RAR!
They are building a children's hospital in Romania, and guess who found out about it (me!) and asked if we could have some shipping space! So this is very good news.
WE ARE SEEKING DONATIONS FROM HOSPITALS AND CLINICS (HUMAN AND ANIMAL) OF SUPPLIES TO SEND FOR OUR NEW PROGRAM OF SPAY/NEUTER IN ROMANIA.
**** PLEASE SEE THE LIST OF SUPPLIES NEEDED BELOW IN THE "WHAT WE NEED NOW" SECTION ****
WE ALSO NOW HAVE AN OFFICE IN BUCHAREST that was donated to us by a wonderful lady. Her name is Livia, and she is now our representative in Romania. She is very intelligent, and a very good person. She is coming to America to meet with me and we are going to seminars about how to set up adoption and foster care programs in Romania. Then, Livia's plan is to help the shelters adopt out animals so that they can have forever homes. We will be launching a billboard campaign as well, our "Compassion is Cool" campaign, and we already have some of the billboards designed, thanks to
Rob Cole.
GEO AND VIOREL ATTENDED AN EDUCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM IN BUDAPEST, HUNGARY, held by
Dog's Trust, UK. They now will be in charge of the school education program.
Marchig Animal Welfare Trust, PETA, UK, have sent RAR books (1000) and educational kits (50, each for 1 classroom) for this program to begin.
There are many new photos and links that I have listed below. All of them are of the recent work in Romania.
Dr. Bachman made an educational sterilization demo tape for us to put on YouTube (and it is also on our webpage, see the link below.)
This is also the first announcement for our fundraisers this year!
On August 23, 2008 Nancy Hair will be hosting a garage sale in Berkeley, CA, to help RAR!
ON SEPTEMBER 14, RAR WILL HAVE A WINE AND APPETIZER FUNDRAISER at the Oasis Grille in Pleasanton, CA!
See info below, and order your tickets now!
That's all for now. I hope you are doing well, and thank you again for all you do for the animals in Romania!
Love, Nancy

BRAILA - RAR'S NEW TARGET CITY FOR ANIMAL WELFARE!
Our work in Braila is challenging. We are working with Daniela Dragomir to set up free spay/neuter (as funding permits) in Braila, and we would also like to see animal welfare brought to the city of Braila in general. This town is currently in a crisis mode, as the animals have had very few people that are helping them--much of this due to pressure by the city. This sounds like the type of situation in which RAR intervenes!!
While in Romania, I met Mr. Serbanoiu, an animal welfare lawyer in Romania. He is in Braila to enforce the animal welfare laws.
The puppies from Romania are great! These puppies came from Braila, Buzau, and Bucharest, and their travel was
financed by the estate of John Owens, who died on December 24, 2007.
The message below is from Daniela Dragomir in Braila. We are now helping her to set up a spay/neuter program in Braila.
Dr. Bachman trained two vets in Braila, gave them spay hooks, and tattoo ink. Each spay/neuter costs us about $15-$20.
HERE IS A MESSAGE TO NANCY FROM DANIELA IN BRAILA:
Thank you Nancy ! (for sending Dr. Bachman to train vets in Braila).
We went today at mayor and vice-mayor, 15 people, by arrangement with Mircea Serbanoiu and Radu Tarmure, who sent Prima TV, a national TV channel. Prima team and vice mayor and us all weren't allowed to visit the dog pound, we saw the dogs from behind the locked gates! a close view of the misery there would have been too awful to be seen on TV.
We asked the contract between city hall - horez to be cancelled, and the city hall to start a program of dog sterilization.
I guess we scored today, but the things with Horez aren't simple. I will keep you informed.
I'm glad the pups arrived OK, and hope they will settle in in CA. (a story of the prince and the pauper!)
Keep in touch, Daniela
Daniela took the photos below of stray dogs in Braila.
WITH YOUR HELP RAR hopes to stop this terrible cycle of animals born into terrible lives of pain and hunger.
THANK GOODNESS FOR DAVE!!!
Things were getting a bit shaky there for a while, as Cristina and I were Dr. Bachman's stand in "vet-techs". All of a sudden, as if riding into town in shining armor, Dave appeared!! Dave is a registered vet tech from the USA, on sabbatical for a year traveling around the world. Please see Dave's blog. He tells of his adventures in Romania in 3 different segments. Please scroll down on his blog to find the Romanian featured presentations!

DEDICATION
This newsletter is dedicated to the memory of Alan Peterson's mother, and to "Izzy" (Isadora) whose story is told below.
"IZZY" (Isadora)
"Isadora" and "Angelina" were two cats belonging to Pat and Grace, elderly women who lived in Mill Valley. Gracie and Pat passed away within months of each other, and Gail, their neighbor, took Isadora and Angelina in but had little room given her other animals. Angelina developed kidney disease, but Izzy was in great shape and needed a new home.
After leaving a posting on an adoption site for over a year, Gail was surprised to receive an email from a woman named Lisa asking if Isadora was still available for adoption. She and Victor wanted to adopt an older cat, one less likely to get a home.
Victor and Lisa turned out to be two absolute angels, who took Izzy into their home and their hearts. The day before the adoption, Gail had Izzy bathed professionally to make her purrrfect for her new people--but after they had Izzy for a few weeks, it became apparent that she had gone deaf. It was later thought she may have thrown a blood clot during the bathing process. When Gail asked Lisa and Victor if they would like to "give her back" because of the deafness, well, you wouldn't believe their indignation! We love her! Never ever would we give her back! (Later, with medical treatment prescribed by Dave and Craig at the Cat Clinic, most of her hearing returned!)
The bond that Victor and Lisa developed with Izzy was incredible. After a while she became "Prince-Iz" as she became the princess of their home...and later "Queen-Iz". She loved to snuggle up in bed with them, sleep under the special blankets that she adopted as her own. The daily rituals that developed were so special: each morning and evening, Izzy would jump into her basket and roll onto her back wanting her "daddy rubs"! Each evening after dinner, she would follow Lisa into the kitchen and meow for her tiny bit of butter...or ice cream, her evening treat. She had a wonderful porch on which to sun herself...every few minutes either Lisa or Victor would get up to let her back in...back out... in...out...in. She would sun herself on top of her inside perch, always getting snuggles and kisses and hugs from Lisa and Victor. Izzy was later diagnosed with early kidney disease, but did just great for a long time; kept her weight on (big time), and her values were perfect. Then, recently, it became apparent that her health was going downhill fast. After a number of trips to the Vet, and continued deterioration in the quality of her life, Victor and Lisa knew that the most loving, the kindest thing they could do for their beloved Izzy would be to end her pain.
It has been two months now, and although they do plan to adopt again, Lisa and Victor's hearts are still broken...it will take more time to heal before they can adopt again.
We at RAR know of Victor and Lisa's loss and pain, and send our heartfelt wishes that the sorrow in your hearts will soon be replaced with love and happy memories of the wonderful years you had with, and gave to, beautiful Isadora.
A DOG'S PLEA
After returning from Romania, I feel that this prayer is needed in our newsletter to share with each of you. It will bring a tear to your eyes, as it did mine.
A DOG'S PLEA
Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is
more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for although I should lick your hand between blows,
your patience and understanding will quickly teach me
the things you would have me learn.
Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music,
as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail
when your footsteps falls upon my waiting ear
Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated animal,
no longer accustomed to bitter elements.
I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.
Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding,
to walk by your side and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life,
should your life be in danger.
And, my friend, when I am very old, and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight,
do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having any fun.
Please see that my trusting life is taken gently.
I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw
that my fate was always safest in your hands.

Dear Friends and Supporters of RAR and the animals of Romania,
It is only WITH YOUR HELP that we are able, day by day, to bring animal welfare to the animals, and the people, of Romania. What we have accomplished to date is incredible, what we have planned for the future is attainable - with support from our wonderful donors. WITH YOUR HELP we have prevented the births of hundreds of thousands of stray dogs and cats, made life better for the animals, through education and training; and introduced the compassion that we all have for the animals, most of whom we will never meet, to people who never dreamed any of this could be a reality in their country!
As always, WITH YOUR HELP, our dreams -- and the dreams of thousands of stray, hungry, lonely, loving animals in Romania -- will come true.
WITH WARMEST REGARDS,
NANCY JANES
Founder, Romania Animal Rescue, Inc.
ALTHOUGH RELOCATING ANIMALS TO THE USA IS NOT OUR PURPOSE, we feel it is necessary to help the animals who are alive in Romania as best we can, while preventing their births in the first place. We hope that someday in the near future Romania will be in a position to care for its own dogs, but currently, this is not the case. Please remember to adopt animals in your local shelters in the USA, who need loving homes as well!
